Woman Dies in California Head-On Crash with Semi

A wrong-way driver was killed when her car hit a tractor trailer head on in California.A woman who was driving the wrong way on Interstate 10 in Riverside County, California, died after her car hit a tractor trailer on June 21.

The Palm Springs Desert News reports that the accident occurred on the eastbound side of the highway around 3:45 a.m. near Palm Desert when a Honda Accord that was traveling east in the westbound lanes of the highway crashed into the big rig head-on near the Washington Street exit. The car then burst into flames upon impact.

Police told the news agency that it appeared as if the unidentified woman was killed instantly.

The driver of the truck, 41-year-old Raul Santiago of Ontario, was reportedly not injured in the accident.

Emergency workers had to close both sides of the highway as they worked about 11 hours to clear the wreckage. Early morning commuter traffic had to be rerouted as a result of the closure.

Officials said that an investigation is underway to determine if alcohol or drugs were to blame for the crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 224 people died as a result of motor vehicle accidents in Riverside County, California, in 2009.
