Two Tractor Trailer Wrecks Kill Four on North Carolina Interstates

Four people were killed in two separate tractor trailer accidents in one day on North Carolina roadways.At least four people were killed in two separate multi-vehicle accidents involving three tractor trailers on North Carolina's western Triangle in Durham County on June 30.

The News Observer reports that the first accident occurred in the morning on Interstate 85 near Hillsborough after two 18-wheelers and two smaller vehicles crashed. The impact of the collision killed the driver of one of the big rigs.

The second accident occurred around 4 p.m. on Interstate 40 just west of N.C. 15-501 near the Orange-Durham county border. Witnesses told the news agency that a Ford pickup truck hit the back of a Chevrolet Equinox, which then veered sideways into the path of an tractor trailer. The big rig then reportedly hit the pickup truck, sending it off the highway. A fourth vehicle involved in the accident overturned in front of the Chevrolet and then burst into flames.

The driver of the pickup truck reportedly was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other people were also killed in the collision.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 19 people died as the result of motor vehicle accidents in Durham County, North Carolina, in 2009.
