Tractor Trailer Driver Dies in Michigan Wreck

The driver of a big rig was killed after his truck lost control and rammed into a brick building in Michigan..The driver of a tractor trailer was killed after he lost control of his big rig and crashed into the side of a store building in Harper Woods, Michigan.

The Detroit Free Press reports that the accident occurred on July 9 when the driver of the 18-wheeler was apparently cut off by another vehicle while traveling eastbound on Interstate 94.

Officials told the news source that the unidentified driver of the truck then veered off the highway and up an embankment before smashing into the side of a Kroger's market. The cab of the truck caught fire and left a large hole in part of the store. One person was also injured in the collision.

Michigan State Police said an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident, but they said witnesses told them there were two cars racing on the highway which may have been a contributing factor in the crash.

The roadway was shut down for several hours while emergency crews cleared the wreckage.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 227 people were killed in accidents involving a fixed object in Michigan in 2009.
