Recent Crashes in Arizona Injure, Kill Drivers and CyclistsA series of roadway accidents in Phoenix, Arizona, in recent days have left drivers dead and injured and one biker in critical condition at an area hospital.

According to ABC affiliate News 15, the bicyclist was taken to a Phoenix hospital with critical injuries on Friday, January 20. Phoenix police Sergeant Tommy Thompson stated that the accident occurred near the intersection of 10th Avenue and Southern Avenue at about 4 p.m.

A spokesman from the Phoenix Fire Department told the media outlet that the 20-year-old cyclist, who has not yet been identified, is in extremely critical condition at a local trauma center. The crash forced city officials to close the intersection for several hours while crews cleared the scene and investigators searched for a cause.

The investigation is said to be ongoing, according to the news provider.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, there were 1,914 pedalcycle accidents across the state in 2010, which led to the death of 19 riders – a 24 percent decrease from the 25 fatalities seen the year before.

In another part of Phoenix, a car crashed into a block wall near 63rd Avenue and Indian School Road, Fox affiliate KSAZ reports.

According to the news source, the crash occurred after the car’s teenage driver allegedly veered off the road, up the curb and into a block wall near a home in west Phoenix. Upon hearing the crash, neighbor Michael O’Neal, 18, ran outside to help. The car had flipped upside down, with the driver trapped in the wreckage.

O’Neal called 911 and remained with the injured driver until firefighters arrived. Officials from the local fire department extricated the driver, and stated that he would recover from his injuries. The name of the driver has not been released to the public, the media outlet stated.

A third accident in Phoenix has investigators looking for the cause of the rollover crash that killed one man on Friday, January 20, according to Arizona Family News.

Authorities say the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle on northbound State Route 51, near Northern Avenue, which sent the vehicle down an embankment into a ravine. The man was taken to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

AZDOT statistics show there were 106,177 crashes in Arizona in 2010, 698 of which were fatal.
