Police Look into Big Rig Accidents in Illinois, Delaware and Tennessee

Police were investigating a number of serious tractor trailer accidents in Delaware, Tennessee and Illinois.  An elderly couple and a motorcyclist perished in two of those crashes.Officials were involved in the investigations of three separate tractor trailer accidents in Illinois, Delaware and Tennessee. One of the collisions resulted in the death of a motorcyclist and another resulted in the death of an elderly couple.

In Illinois, police are continuing to look into the cause of a double fatal accident involving a big rig in Fulton County overnight on July 31.

WGIL reports that 62-year-old Eileen Hammond and 65-year-old Curtis Hammond of Astoria were pronounced dead on the scene after their Jeep was hit by an 18-wheeler that had failed to stop at the intersection of U.S. 24 and Highway 136.

Police said the accident occurred at the intersection known as Cal Brown Corner in Lewistown.

The driver of the truck, 48-year-old Robert Austin was reportedly issued a ticket for failing to stop at the intersection.

In Tennessee, officials said that charges will likely be filed in connection with a tractor trailer accident that claimed the life of a 45-year-old motorcycle driver.

WBIR reports that the collision occurred around 10:00 a.m. on August 3 when part of a semi that was traveling on Highway 129, also known as "The Dragon," crossed over the center line at mile marker 5 near the North Carolina state line and hit the motorcycle in the southbound lane.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol told the news agency that Dwight Woodward's motorcycle then went underneath the tractor trailer and was run over by its wheels.

Woodward reportedly died while he was being transported to Blount Memorial Hospital.

In Delaware, police are asking for the public's help in finding the driver of a tractor trailer who they say may have cut off a vehicle on the Conchester Highway on August 3.

The Delco Times reports that the accident occurred around 10:00 a.m. when the driver of a Volkswagen GTI attempted to pass two trucks traveling westbound on the highway. The female driver of the car was reportedly cut off by one of the trucks and wound up crashing her vehicle as resullt.

According to the news agency, police pulled over one of the tractor trailers shortly after the accident, but are looking for the other truck that may have also been involved in the crash.

The 25-year-old driver of the Volkswagen was taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The Federal Motor Vehicle Carrier Safety Administration reports that 3,215 large trucks were involved in fatal accidents in the U.S. in 2009.
