One Person Killed after Tractor Trailer Driver Falls Asleep at Wheel on I-84 in New York

New York State police said it appeared the driver of a tractor trailer fell asleep behind the wheel before a fatal accident on Interstate 84.New York State police are continuing to investigate the cause of an early morning accident that killed a Newburgh man on July 7, but said it appears as if a big rig driver who fell asleep at the wheel is to blame.

The Times Herald-Record reports that 55-year-old James Mann died from the injuries he sustained after his car was hit by an eastbound double-unit FedEx tractor trailer that had crossed over the center median strip near exit 7 on Interstate 84 in Montgomery.

According to the new agency, police said that they are investigating whether the driver of the big rig, 50-year-old Marion Williams of Ohio, fell asleep right before the crash. No charges against Williams have yet been filed in the fatal accident. He and a passenger in the tractor trailer were taken to St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital where they were both reportedly treated and released.

One lane of the roadway in each direction was shut down while emergency crews cleared the wreckage.

The National Motor Carrier Safety Administration reports that 13 percent of all commercial motor vehicle drivers were considered to have been driving while fatigued at the time of an accident.
