Ohio couple wins $4 million in medical malpractice lawsuit

Ohio couple wins $4 million in medical malpractice lawsuitAn Ohio couple was recently awarded nearly $4 million by a jury in their medical malpractice lawsuit, which claimed a doctor was negligent while performing a lumbar puncture procedure.

A Lucas County Common Pleas Court jury awarded $3,926,200 to Fostoria, Ohio, couple Sherry and Jack Reinhart, according to the Toledo Blade.

The couple's medical malpractice attorneys told the news source that the jurors determined that the Toledo Clinic and Dr. Purvi Saraiya were negligent while providing care to Sherry Reinhart.

The medical malpractice lawsuit claimed that the doctor and the hospital violated safety rules in performing a lumbar puncture procedure in May 2008. The negligence, the suit alleged, caused Sherry Reinhart to suffer permanent injuries, including paralysis.

The Toledo Hospital was initially named in the lawsuit but decided to settle instead of going to court.

One of the couple's attorneys told the news source that the jury reached a unanimous verdict and that the decision sent a message to healthcare professionals.

"The message is that doctors are not allowed to violate safety rules and when they do, the community will hold them accountable," he told the news source.
