New York Teen Hit by Tractor Trailer Dies Heading Home from School

A 13-year-old Staten Island girl was killed after she was hit by a tractor trailer when she left school to board a city bus home.A 13-year-old girl died after she was hit by a tractor trailer as she left her last day of school in Richmond County, New York.

WPIX reports that the accident occurred on June 18 when Aniya Williams had just left the Staten Island School for Civic Leadership in Graniteville, Staten Island, when she was hit by the 18-wheeler as she crossed the street to board a city bus.

According to the news agency, an off-duty emergency medical technician witnessed the accident from a nearby gas station. He reportedly rushed to Williams' aid while workers tried to pull her from beneath the big rig. She was taken to Richmond University Medical Center where she later died.

Witnesses told the news source that the tractor trailer did not run a red light at the intersection where the accident happened. They said it appeared as if the semi was not speeding at the time of the crash.

The driver of the truck was reportedly detained by police at the scene of the deadly crash. Officials continue to investigate the exact cause of the crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 306 pedestrians were killed as the result of motor vehicle accidents in New York in 2009.
