NC Couple Killed on Motorcycle After Hit By Suspected Drunk Driver

A man and woman died after their motorcycle was hit by a car.A couple in North Carolina was killed after a driver reportedly hit the motorcyclists while attempting to reach for his iPod, according to NBC-17.

State Highway Patrol said the crash occurred after midnight on Highway 82 near Harnett County. Police said a car, driven by 25-year-old Samuel Alan Brown, drifted out of the roadway's center lane and hit the motorcycle head on. The impact killed the bike's driver, 27-year old Chris Smith and his girlfriend Ashli Armstrong, a 20-year-old nursing student. Both of the victims were from Dunn.

It is unclear as to whether the victims were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.

Brown claims he was reaching for his iPod when the accident happened, although police suspect alcohol may have also been a factor in the incident, reported the news station. Brown has been charged with impaired driving and two counts of felony death by motor vehicle.

Thirty-seven percent of motor vehicle fatalities in 2008 were alcohol related, according to the website Alcohol Alert. Of the 1,433 motor vehicle deaths in North Carolina that year, 30 percent were related to drunk driving.
