A man won a settlement from Seattle after a city police car hit his vehicle.A Washington man who was severely injured when his pickup truck was hit by a police car in 2009 has settled his lawsuit against Seattle for $650,000, reported the Seattle Times.

Donald Meyer was driving at about 5:20 a.m. on February 11, 2009, when Officer John Welch lost control of his police cruiser after reportedly going over a patch of ice. The newspaper said the car struck Meyer's truck head-on, causing Meyer to suffer injuries to his chest, neck back and abdomen.

Although the lawsuit says Meyer has since returned to his job at a bottle making factory, he still experiences headaches and other ailments as a result of the collision. In his lawsuit against the city the plaintiff originally asked for more than $1 million in damages, according to the news source.

The source said Welch still works at the Seattle Police Department. Authorities did not specify whether Welch was retrained following the accident.

To drive safely on icy streets, motorists should go slowly and leave plenty of room to stop between vehicles, according to the Weather Channel website. Braking gently is also essential to make sure the car's wheels don't lock up.
