Man Killed in Delaware Motorcycle Crash, Son Survives

A man survived a motorcycle crash that killed his father.A Delaware man who was riding his motorcycle with his son as a passenger was killed after losing control of the bike while trying to make a left-hand turn.

Anthony Brooks, 37, was pronounced dead at the scene when police arrived. His son, who has only been identified as a 19-year-old New Castle man, was hospitalized for minor injuries but has since been released.

Police said Brooks was operating his motorcycle at a high speed on New Castle Avenue when he lost control, causing the bike to hit the curb and several concrete pillars before flipping over. Brooks was not wearing a helmet, although published reports say his son was.

The incident remains under investigation, although authorities say both speed and alcohol are being considered as contributing factors to the crash.

Speeding was responsible for 35 percent of all fatal motorcycle crashes in 2008, according to the Governors Highway Safety Administration. Alcohol was the second-leading cause of accidents, with the agency reporting that 30 percent of riders killed in crashes that year had blood alcohol levels of 0.08 percent or over.
