Japanese Couple Injured in Utah Tour Bus Crash File Lawsuit

A Japanese couple has sued multiple companies they claim were responsible for injuries they received in a tour bus crash.A Japanese couple who were injured in a tour bus accident in Utah last year are suing multiple travel companies and the vehicle’s driver, alleging that the defendant’s negligence, carelessness and recklessness caused the event.

The plaintiffs, Kei and Mai Maeda, name Canyon Transportation Inc., Western Leisure Inc., Nippon Travel Agency America Inc. and the driver, Yasushi Mikuni, in the suit. The lawsuit claims that on August 9, 2010, Mikuni was operating the tour bus, which contained the Maedas and 12 other passengers, north of Cedar City. Mikuni allegedly fell asleep while at the wheel, causing the bus to drive off the road and roll over.

The couple claims that Mikuni dozed off multiple times before the accident occurred, but continued to drive, subjecting the passengers to “extreme danger.” In addition, the lawsuit accuses the travel companies of providing a vehicle that was not properly equipped and claims the defendants allowed Mikuni to work as both the driver and tour guide, even though it would not give him any time to rest.

The accident killed three people and injured nine others. The Maedas are seeking unspecified damages for their physical and emotional injuries, as well as loss of wages.

According to KSL-TV, a couple who lost their 20-year-old son in the accident have also filed a suit against Mikuni.
