Investigation Continues into Fatal Kentucky Tractor Trailer Accident

Kentucky State Police continue to investigate a tractor trailer accident that killed a 39-year-old local elementary school teacher.Kentucky State Police are continuing to investigate the cause of an accident that killed a Pine Knot Elementary School teacher in McCreary County on June 22.

The McCreary Record reports that the accident occurred around 1:20 p.m. when a car being driven by 39-year-old Anthony Johnson attempted to pass an 18-wheeler that was traveling northbound on U.S. 27 in Whitley City.

According to police, Johnson's car crossed the center line and struck a 2007 GMC Sierra pickup truck head-on.

Johnson's 39-year-old wife, Nena, was pronounced dead at the scene. Johnson was airlifed to University of Tennessee Medical Center where he was reportedly treated for his injuries and later released.

The driver of the pickup truck, 54-year-old Ronald Capehart was also treated for injuries that he sustained in the crash.

Police are still trying to determine the exact cause of the collision. One witness reportedly told officials that it appeared as if the tractor trailer forced Johnson to cross the center line.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 148 people who were traveling as passengers were killed in motor vehicle accidents in Kentucky in 2009 before the fatal accident.
