Illinois Couple Files Medical Malpractice Suit Over Nerve Block

Illinois couple files medical malpractice suit over nerve block during knee replacement surgeryAn Illinois couple have filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against an anesthesiologist and his practice for performing a nerve block that allegedly caused serious injuries to the wife.

Esther W. Spencer and her husband, Fred Spencer, claim that Dr. Gregory Collins improperly placed a femoral nerve block while performing a total right knee replacement on Esther Spencer, according to the St. Clair Record. The medical malpractice lawsuit also states that Collins proceeded with the nerve block even after encountering difficulty with the procedure, allegedly causing femoral neuropathy and nerve injury to Spencer.

Spencer has asked for more than $50,000 in damages from Collins and his practice, Maryville Physicians Services for Collins's alleged negligence during the procedure. The lawsuit claims that the nerve damage resulted in physical pain, distress and anguish for Spencer.

Her husband also is asking for more than $50,000 from the two defendants for loss of consortium with his wife and loss of her services, according to the news source.

Nerve damage and the pain resulting from nerve damage can range from mild to severe, according to WebMD, and can seriously affect the sufferer's quality of life.
