Former College Basketball Standout Dies in NC Bus Crash

Lorenzo Charles was killed in a North Carolina bus accident.Lorenzo Charles, a former college basketball star who played for North Carolina State University, was killed after a tour bus he was driving crashed in Raleigh, according to multiple reports.

Charles, who was the only person on the vehicle, was operating a bus for Elite Tours when he swerved off Interstate 40 and crashed into multiple trees before coming to rest on the highway. The bus sustained such heavy damage that emergency responders had to use the jaws of life to remove Charles' body from the wreckage.

Although authorities believe the bus was traveling at 70 miles per hour – 5 miles above the speed limit – at the time of the crash, the cause of the accident is still unclear.

Mark Gottfried, the new head basketball coach at NCSU who played against Charles in the 1985 NCAA tournament, told reporters he saw Charles a week before his death when he visited the college campus.

"He had a big smile on his face, and he was so full of life," Gottfried said. "We lost a great one, and I’m not just talking about the basketball player. He had a great personality."

Charles was famous among college basketball fans for his game-winning dunk that secured the NCAA championship for North Carolina State in 1983.
