Father Investigated After Phoenix Fire Burns Two Children

Father Investigated After Phoenix Fire Burns Two ChildrenThe father of two children who apparently left his kids alone in an apartment that caught fire, causing them injuries, has been investigated by local police.

According to the Arizona Republic, witnesses said that they saw the man leave the apartment before the fire started. Passersby saw the smoke emanating from the building and rescued the departed man's 10-month-old son and 2-year-old daughter before firefighters arrived on the scene. One woman was injured trying to break the glass containing the fire extinguisher and the glass in the apartment's window while attempting to rescue the kids inside the burning apartment. The children sustained burns and injuries from smoke inhalation, and reportedly remain hospitalized.

The children's father was questioned by police regarding his whereabouts at the time of the fire, and could face child abuse charges depending on what the investigation uncovers.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, the news source reports, but firefighters were able to contain it within 20 minutes. It caused extensive smoke and fire damage in two apartments, and water damage in a third, said Phoenix Fire Department Captain Tony Mure.
