Family Of Florida Pastor Sues Transport System Over His Death

Family Of Florida Pastor Sues Transport System Over His DeathThe family of an elderly, wheelchair-bound Florida pastor has filed a personal injury lawsuit against Space Coast Area Transit, claiming its staff left him unattended, causing him to fall, sustain injuries and die.

The lawsuit states that in 2008, Reverend Owen O. Human rode a bus operated by the defendant from his home to a dialysis center, then was picked up again by the bus once the procedure was complete, according to Florida Today. After a staff member left him on the bus, she allegedly walked back into the building, leaving him unattended. When she returned, Human was lying face-down on the floor, and was bleeding and unconscious, according to the personal injury lawsuit. He died three days later at a hospital.

Human's family claims that he was left alone for 20 minutes or more, and that during that time he fell, struck his forehead, lost blood and eventually stopped breathing and died. They reportedly seek at least $15,000 in damages from the transportation provider.

"Our contention is that he should not have been left there – particularly after undergoing dialysis," the family's personal injury attorney said.

According to the National Kidney Foundation, dialysis is needed in patients who have lost 85 to 90 percent of their kidney function.
