Why is Invokana® Dangerous?
Invokana®, a SGLT2 Inhibitor, in combination with diet and exercise, is designed to fight Type 2 diabetes by forcing blood sugar to leave the body through urination. On May 15, 2015, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned that Invokana® and other SGLT2 Inhibitor drugs including Invokamet®, Farxiga®, Xigduo®, Jardiance® and Glyxambi® can cause the body to produce too many acids called ketones, resulting in a condition known as ketoacidosis. All patients who were treated with SGLT2 inhibitors from March 2013 through June 6, 2014 and reported that they suffered ketoscidosis required an emergency room visit or hospitalization to treat the condition.
Ketoacidosis Symptoms to Look For
Early warning symptoms of ketoacidosis that Invokana® and other SGLT2 Inhibitor drug users should be aware of include difficulty breathing, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, mental fatigue/confusion, and unusual fatigue or sleepiness. Symptoms of ketoacidosis may begin early as two weeks after a patient first takes Invokana® or other SGLT2 Inhibitor drugs.
If you begin to experience these symptoms while taking one of these Type 2 diabetes drugs, please seek medical attention immediately. However, do not stop or change the diabetes medications you take until told to do so by a physician.
