Crashes in New Jersey Rock Monmouth County and New York's Hudson ValleyCar accidents in New Jersey and New York this week have left a few dead and many more injured.

The Wall Street Journal reports on a Sunday, July 24 crash in the Hudson Valley of New York state around 11:45 in the morning. A 21-year-old man from New Jersey, Yamil Mendez of Paterson, was killed when his sports utility vehicle overturned on the New York Thruway.

Five other passengers were injured. According to the news report, the young adults – three from New Jersey and two from New York City – were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Mendez was driving north on Interstate 87, the Journal reports. His tire blew out and the vehicle crashed, then overturned a number of times. Mendez was thrown from the car, according to the police report. He was declared dead, later on at a hospital in Poughkeepsie. The crash took place in the town of New Paltz, which is 75 miles north of New York City.

On Wednesday, July 27, a Freehold man died after a two-car crash on Route 522 in New Jersey. Township police and the county prosecutor’s Major Crimes Bureau all are investigating the accident and will be assisted by the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team, according to the Asbury Park Press.

According to the news report, 28-year-old Shayna Zalcberg’s 2005 Honda Accord entered the eastbound lane of Route 522 and hit the passenger side of a 2007 Honda Pilot driven by a 41-year-old man from Englishtown. The car hit the Pilot in the westbound lane to the west of Route 9.

Assistant Monmouth County Prosecutor Marc C. Lemieux reported that Feliciano Colon, a 36-year-old man and a passenger the Accord, died in a local trauma center late Wednesday night. The injuries from the crash were substantial and touched all involved, save the driver of the Honda Pilot.

Zalcberg is currently listed in serious condition at an area hospital. The Accord passenger, a 35-year-old Freehold man, is in serious condition after being transported to a local hospital. The passenger in the Pilot, a 71-year-old woman from Englishtown, was taken to the hospital, as well, where she was treated and released.

Monmouth Country, New Jersey, experienced a total of 21,386 car crashes in 2010 and 21,712 car crashes in 2009, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
