Colorado Crash Kills One Fort Collins WomanJessica Whipple of Fort Collins, Colorado, was killed on Monday, July 11, when she crashed her car head-on into an SUV in the opposite lane on Timberline Road, just north of Prospect Road at about 2:30 p.m., The Coloradoan reports.

According to the news source, the 23-year-old passenger was riding in a Honda Civic when the driver, Daniel Derby, crossed the center line and clipped an oncoming sedan, then slammed into a Ford Explorer.

Whipple and Derby had to be extricated from the car by the Poudre Fire Authority and were transported to Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland by emergency medical technicians from Poudre Valley Hospital. Whipple died after arriving in Loveland, the news outlet stated.

Local police authorities are working to determine whether speed or drugs may have contributed to the crash, citing that the speed limit is 45 mph where the accident took place, and there are no skid marks from either vehicle, according to the news provider.

The driver of the Explorer sustained moderate injuries, while both vehicles were totaled in the accident.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, there were 27,213 crashes in the state resulting in 290 fatalities in 2008, the most recent year for which statistics are available.
