Car Accident Snarls Traffic, Closes Highway in Kansas

Car Accident Snarls Traffic, Closes Highway in KansasKansas Highway 10 was closed in both directions for more than six hours recently because of a serious accident, the Eudora News reports, one of three accidents in Douglas County that occurred between 3 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, August 25.

On Highway 10, a cement mixer blew a tire, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle and swerve into the north shoulder of the westbound lane before veering back across the median, rolling over and coming to rest on its side. The driver, 44-year-old Richard Vandruff, was rescued and taken to a regional trauma center after being trapped in the truck for more than half an hour.

Kansas Highway Patrol’s commercial vehicle accident reconstruction team had to be brought in to investigate the collision on Highway 10, which accounted for some of the time for the closure. A hazardous materials team also was called to the scene because of fuel and cement that had spilled on the highway.

The other two accidents that occurred that day in Douglas County were a car and motorcycle collision and a roll over.

The car and motorcycle accident occurred on U.S. Highway 24/40 when the vehicle in front of the motorcycle stopped suddenly. The driver and passenger on the motorcycle, Donald and Doreen Burnett, were thrown from their seats when brakes were applied. Both people from the motorcycle were transported to local hospitals, and the investigation is continuing. According to the news source, neither patient was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The third accident of the day occurred on the Kansas Turnpike, when 29-year-old Eugene Hookano Pok Riddick II lost control of his vehicle and struck the side of another car. Both vehicles then crossed all lanes of traffic as the first car came to rest in a ditch and the second vehicle flipped over on its side. The driver and passenger of the second vehicle, Robert and Joyce Berkoski, were transported to a hospital with unknown injuries. Riddick was also taken to the hospital by helicopter.

Kansas roadways turned deadly just a few days later when a motorcyclist was killed when an automobile made a legal left turn as the motorcycle was attempting to pass the car on North 34th Street in Kansas City, Fox 4 reports. The accident is under investigation by the Kansas Police Department’s Traffic Support Unit/Critical Collision Response Team.
