According to the State Bar of Georgia, some automobile accidents just can't be avoided, but it's important for drivers to know what to do when a collision occurs. Drivers must first stop their car, because leaving the scene of an accident can sometimes lead to criminal prosecution, even if the driver wasn't at fault. Drivers should then find out if any people involved in medical assistance. If there are injured people, have someone call an ambulance or doctor. The next phone call should be made to the police. These officers are trained to deal with these situations, especially the shock that the drivers may be experiencing that make it difficult to think clearly.

Identifying all of the drivers involved in the accident is also critical. Obtaining the name, address and licence number of the vehicles is necessary, and names of insurance companies and policy numbers is even more helpful. The names and addresses of all passengers involved are also important. If there are any eye-witnesses to the accident, drivers should get their names and addresses as well.
