Arizona Teenager Killed in Kansas Boating Accident

Arizona Teenager Killed in Kansas Boating AccidentA teenager from Mesa, Arizona, was killed in a Kansas boating accident over the Independence Day weekend, according to ABC affiliate KAKE.

The news source reports that 13-year-old Whitney Nicole Smith was killed when she was struck by the boat that was pulling her while she was wake boarding on Cheney Lake.

According to the Reno County, Kansas Sheriff's office, an autopsy is currently being performed, but preliminary investigations suggest that the teenager was struck by the propeller of the boat when it came to pick her up after she fell off of the wake board.

Passengers on the boat reportedly pulled Smith out of the water after the accident occurred, performed CPR and headed back to shore, where emergency personnel continued attempting to revive her. The efforts, however, proved unsuccessful and Smith died at the scene from the injuries she sustained in the accident.

The Wichita Eagle reports that the victim was boating with friends and family at Cheney Lake and it was unclear whether or not she was wearing a life jacket.
