Arizona Crash Leaves Baby Girl in Critical Condition

A baby in Arizona was left in serious condition following a car wreck.An Arizona woman has been arrested in connection with a car accident that critically injured her infant daughter, according to various reports.

The accident occurred in Phoenix and reportedly closed down 43rd Avenue between Thomas and Indian School. Police said 38-year-old Angelita Murrieta's car drifted over the center lane into the roadways southbound lane, causing her to slam into another vehicle. Police suspect impaired driving could have been involved, although it has not been confirmed.

The crash left Murrieta's 7 month-old daughter in critical condition. The girl, who police said was not properly restrained in the car at the time of the accident, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Police said the occupants of the other vehicle – a man and his 2-year-old daughter – were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Murrieta was charged with one count of aggravated assault, two counts of endangerment and one count of child abuse.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of death among children in the U.S. More than two-thirds of fatally injured children are killed while riding with a drunk driver.
