A shoulder pain pump is a medical device implanted into the shoulder following arthroscopic surgery for the purposes of alleviating post-operative shoulder pain. The pump works by infusing pain medication directly into the shoulder through a catheter for a period of up to 72 hours. After the medication has been administered, the disposable pump is removed and discarded.
Recent studies link shoulder pain pumps to Postarthroscopic Glenohumeral Chondrolysis (PAGCL), a condition in which shoulder cartilage deteriorates. Symptoms include shoulder pain (whether in motion or at rest), clicking, popping, grinding, shoulder stiffness, weakness, and decreased range of motion.
