Honda Recalls Pilots and Odysseys, Again

honda pilot recallsHonda Motor Company announced a major recall of two of its popular crossover models due to potential problems with the factory installation of driver-side airbags. This news comes in addition to an ignition key recall announced at the end of 2012 involving the same vehicle models.

The voluntary recall announcement details a 748,000-vehicle recall of late-model Honda Pilot vehicles from model years 2009 to 2013 and Honda Odyssey vehicles from model years 2011 to 2013. The affected vehicles were manufactured between March 13, 2008 and December 21, 2012.

Honda states that there have been no reports of injury or death related to the latest recall of the crossover vehicles.

The Current Issue

The current safety issues involve the driver-side airbags of these vehicles, which may not function or deploy during a crash. This could result in severe injury to the driver of the vehicle. Honda states that the when the airbags were installed at the factory a production error occurred and the rivets holding the plastic cover in place may not have been put in correctly.

This lack of rivets can lead to incorrect or faulty performance of the airbag should it be triggered to deploy during an accident. Lack of airbag or a malfunctioning airbag can lead to the risk of injury if the vehicle becomes involved in a crash.

The Remedy

Honda will provide a free fix of the airbag rivet problem. Owners of recalled vehicles can expect to receive notification from the company that will instruct them to bring their vehicle to a Honda dealer. Dealers will inspect all drivers’ side airbag modules and if rivets are found to be missing, they will remedy the problem free of charge to the consumer. The recall process is expected to be available from local Honda dealers around February 16, 2013.

Second Recall in Two Months for Pilots and Odysseys

This is the second major recall for Honda in two months. On December 12, 2012, Honda Motor Company announced a recall of the same models, the Pilot and the Odyssey, when it was discovered that the ignition key on these models could be removed while the vehicle was not in park. The ignition problem affects model years 2003 and 2004.

Honda is in the process of notifying consumers about this recall.
