A car accident that took place on August 23 in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, ended up taking the life of one of the individuals involved in it. According to the Herald-Tribune, the crash, which occurred on Lakewood Ranch Boulevard, allegedly killed a 51-year-old man from the nearby town of Bradenton.
The news source reports that according to information provided by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the traffic accident claimed the life of Sammy K. Fletcher. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Amy S. Hall, a 34-year-old woman and fellow resident of Bradenton, whose car Fletcher allegedly struck, received only minor injuries. The same was true of her two children, aged 2 and 4, who were taken to Lakewood Ranch Medical Center for treatment and care.
Law enforcement officials reported that Fletcher was allegedly headed north, driving a 2001 Chevrolet, when the crash occurred at approximately 8:25 p.m.
When Fletcher allegedly attempted to pass two cars driving ahead of him on Lakewood Ranch Boulevard, he ended up striking a curb along the side of the road. This caused him to allegedly lose control of his vehicle, at which point the accident was all but inevitable, FHP troopers reported.
Upon losing control of his Chevrolet, Fletcher ended up spinning counterclockwise and allegedly crossing the median to the other side of the road, according to the news source. At the end of this disastrous chain of events, Fletcher's car apparently crashed into Hall's vehicle. FHP troopers reported that Hall had been operating a 2004 Cadillac sport utility vehicle.
In 2009, a total of 2,563 individuals died in car accidents that took place in Florida, according to the state's Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. This figure represented a 14.1 percent decrease from the previous year, when 2,983 auto accident fatalities were reported.
